He had a distinguished career in engineering and industry, including work with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (the forerunner of NASA), development work on agricultural product conversion to plastics, and contributions to the Manhattan Project during World War II. He co-founded Vacuum Electronic Engineering Company (VEECO), which grew into an international company with 2,500 workers and operations across multiple countries.

The Albert Nerken School of Engineering at The Cooper Union is named in his honor.
