Grants fund summer institutes, graduate coursework, action research, mentoring, conference attendance, and self-designed fellowships. The NEA Foundation's Learning & Leadership grants fund individual and group professional development, and Fund for Teachers supports fellowships teachers design themselves. Federal Title II-A funds also support district-run professional development for educators.
Public funding comes primarily from Title II, Part A of ESSA, administered by the U.S. Department of Education and distributed through state education agencies to districts. Private funders include the NEA Foundation, Fund for Teachers, state and local education associations and foundations, and corporate education programs. Community foundations also support educator development in their regions.
It depends on the source. Federal Title II-A funds flow to districts, which decide how to use them for professional development, so individual teachers do not apply directly. Many private grants, however, such as those from the NEA Foundation and Fund for Teachers, are awarded directly to individual educators or small groups. Some NEA Foundation grants require current membership, so check each funder's eligibility rules.
