Overview

Sustaining Grants

Award Amount: Up to $20,000 per year

Geographic Scope: New England region (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont)

Focus Areas: Grassroots anti-racist organizing and movement building across New England, including:

  • Anti-Racism

  • Education Justice

  • Housing & Tenants Rights

  • Human Rights

  • Immigrant Rights

  • Workers Rights

  • Youth Organizing
    • Eligibility

    • Tax-Exempt Status: Not required. Organizations do not need 501(c)(3) status or a fiscal sponsor; work must fall within IRS definitions of charitable or educational tax-exempt activities
    • Budget Limit: Groups with budgets over $300,000 are not funded
    • Organization Type: Both emerging/start-up groups and established organizations are eligible
    • Geographic Coverage: Both urban and rural organizing across New England
    • Purpose: General operating support and project work

      Application Process

    • If organization has not received funding from Haymarket in the past three years: Must speak with a staff person to receive application. Phone conversation required to discuss work before invitation to apply.
    • If organization has received funding in the past three years: Application package emailed in October
    • Requests for applications considered until December 1

      Grantmaking

      Grant sizes determined after careful evaluation considering:
    • Haymarket's Funding Criteria
    • Commitment to strengthening anti-racist movement building in New England
    • Each proposal's merits

    Note for 2022-2023 Cycle: Multi-Year Sustaining Grants were offered (up to $20,000 per year for 3 years) for groups that had received high or medium funding at least 3 times over the last 5 years.

      Reporting

      All grantees must complete a follow-up report summarizing:
    • Reflections on goals and outcomes
    • How funds were utilized
    • Impact created in the community

    Background

    Haymarket People's Fund is a 49-year-old multicultural, anti-racism foundation that has provided resources to almost every major social justice movement in New England for over 40 years. The organization is committed to anti-racist, community-driven grantmaking practices.

    Step 1: Determine Eligibility

  • Check if your organization has received Haymarket funding in the past three years
  • Step 2: Request Application (if not funded in past 3 years)

  • Call 617-522-7676 ext. 115 and speak with a Haymarket staff person about your work

  • Schedule a phone conversation

  • Phone conversation deadline: December 1 (to request application for next cycle)

  • After discussion, you will be invited to apply if you meet basic criteria
  • Step 3: Receive Application Package (if funded in past 3 years)

  • Application package will be emailed in October
  • Step 4: Complete Application

  • Use provided application materials

  • Applications available in Spanish (and potentially other languages in future cycles)

  • Include narrative addressing Haymarket's Funding Criteria

  • Clearly explain your organizing work and how it addresses root causes of injustice
  • Step 5: Submit Application

  • Submit by deadline: Wednesday, December 3 (for 2025-2026 cycle; next deadline expected early December 2026)
