Overview: Provides grants to Camden high schools to improve achievement for English language learners and students with disabilities. This is one of the largest awards made in the Camden Education Fund's history.

Award Amounts:

$190,000 - $250,000 per school (ranging from $190,000 to $250,000)

Total program funding: $1.1 million

Geographic Scope: Camden, NJ

Target Population:

English language learners

Students with disabilities

Students lagging academically

Initial support for 400 students

Eligible Schools:

All Camden City public high schools

District schools

Renaissance schools

Charter schools

Schools Awarded (2025):
1. Camden High School - $244,000
- Focus: Summer reading and math training to increase students' comprehension and fluency skills

2. Eastside High School - $250,000
- Focus: Cohorts of ninth-grade multilingual learners staying connected through senior year to create sense of belonging

3. Camden Prep High School - $208,000
- Focus: Reading intervention program for students with learning disabilities and ADHD

4. Mastery High School of Camden - $250,000
- Focus: Employment and life skills support for students with disabilities ages 18-21

5. Camden Academy Charter High School - $190,000
- Focus: Professional development and coaching to provide instruction to multilingual learners

Development of support plans for English language learners

Development of support plans for students with disabilities

Support for academically lagging students

Professional development for teachers

Coaching for educators

Reading intervention programs

Life skills and employment training

Student Demographics:

Approximately 15% of Camden's students have disabilities

Approximately 15% of Camden's students are multilingual learners

Future Plans: After a two-year pilot, the grant program may be expanded to include K-8 schools in Camden.

Background: This grant program was designed to ensure ALL students have access to great teachers, curriculum, and resources to create true educational equity in Camden. It recognizes that district, charter, and Renaissance schools typically compete for students and funding but are committed to helping their most marginalized students.
