Overview

Mission Statement “The Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation will be a trusted funder in Bexar County, Texas, by supporting programs that improve education, health, family well-being, arts, culture, and animal welfare.” History Nancy Smith Hurd was born on March 6, 1926 in San Antonio, Texas. She was a descendent of the McKean family who came to Texas from Tennessee before the fall of the Alamo. She graduated from Alamo Heights High School and attended Trinity University. In 1957 she married the late John G. Hurd of Laredo, Texas, who was a widower with four young children. In 1970 her husband was appointed as Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa, where he served until 1975. Mrs. Hurd was a gracious and talented First Lady of the Embassy during this exciting period in the lives of the family. She was particularly adept at coping with the task of transferring the embassy residence between Capetown and Pretoria every six months. Mrs. Hurd supported numerous philanthropic organizations addressing needs in education, charity, arts, medical research and nursing. She had a deep respect for the nurses who care for and tend the sick and wounded. Grant Making The Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation makes distributions on a semi-annual basis. These grants are directed to 501(c)(3) organizations which fall within the principal charitable purposes of the foundation as outlined in Article 5 of the document. The Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation will consider significant grant requests where the award of the grant would make a major impact in the community; create opportunities to partner with other philanthropic minded funders encouraging community collaboration; fund capital campaigns in progress; and for the advancement of an organization which would not occur without the grant.
