Mission City Community Fund General Grants

Geographic Scope: City of Santa Clara and surrounding Silicon Valley

Focus Areas: The fund supports programs in five areas of giving:

  • Social Services

  • Healthcare

  • Education

  • Environment

  • Theater and Arts
  • Eligible Uses:

  • Initiate a new project or program

  • Support further development of a current service

  • Purchase equipment

  • Project budgets (required only when requesting more than $5,000)
  • What MCCF Does NOT Fund:

  • Political or lobbying organizations

  • Organizations or foundations that distribute money to charity (pass-through)

  • Private foundations or endowments

  • Sponsorships of fundraising events

  • Beauty or talent pageants

  • Salaries or wages of employees

  • Purchases already made or services already rendered
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization

  • Must serve residents, groups, or organizations in the City of Santa Clara and surrounding Silicon Valley

  • Preference given to proposals demonstrating urgent and immediate need for funding

  • Recipients who have received grants twice consecutively may not receive a grant for a third consecutive funding cycle; must sit out at least one funding cycle before reapplying

  • Within six months of receiving funding, grant recipients must demonstrate that the MCCF grant has been expended consistent with the purposes indicated in the application
  • Funding History:

  • 2003: $119,500 distributed

  • 2010: Over $250,000 distributed

  • Past five years: Over $1,000,000 contributed

    How to Apply

    Grant Application Process

    Funding Cycles:

  • Spring Cycle: Deadline January 31, funds distributed in April

  • Fall Cycle: Deadline July 31, funds distributed in October
  • Submission Method:

  • All applications must be completed online via the website (effective July 1, 2024)

  • Paper applications via US Mail are no longer accepted

  • Timestamp recorded at submission is the official date and time

  • Late applications are automatically deferred to the following funding cycle

    1. Detailed Project Description (Required)
    - Scope of project
    - Number of clients served
    - Start and end dates
    - Number of people involved (paid or volunteer)
    - How effectiveness/success will be measured
    - Specific portions of project to be funded by this grant
    - History of similar or identical instances of this project

    2. Project Budget (Required only when requesting more than $5,000)
    - Specification of each category of spending needed for project success

    3. Organizational History and Grant Details (Required)
    - History of the organization
    - Details of how grant applies to organization's mission

    4. Most Recent Financial Statement (Required)
    - Accounting statements for previous year using GAAP
    - For larger nonprofits, audited statements are expected

    5. Articles of Incorporation (Required)
    - Copy of letter from state government certifying nonprofit incorporation

    6. 501(c)(3) Status Letter (Required)
    - Copy of letter from IRS certifying 501(c)(3) status
    - Must include Tax Identification number

    7. Current Board of Directors List (Required)
    - List of current Board including Officers

    8. Organizational Chart (Required)
    - Names of all individuals at all levels
    - Notation of paid vs. volunteer positions

    9. Brochure/Program Information (Required)
    - Marketing materials introducing potential clients to services/deliverables
    - Marketing materials used to solicit donations from corporations/individuals

    10. Letter(s) of Evidence of Community Support (Required)
    - Letters of recommendation from satisfied clients
    - Written by organizations/individuals who received products/services
    - Attesting to value and effectiveness in community
    - Multiple letters should be submitted as one document

    11. Most Recent Form 990 (Including Schedule A) (Required)
    - Copy of most recently filed Federal tax return
    - Exception: Government agencies (such as school districts) are exempt
