AARP Foundation Grantmaking Program

Status: Active; AARP Foundation does not have a set Request For Application (RFA) schedule nor does it accept unsolicited applications.

Geographic Scope: Currently concentrating efforts in 22 U.S. states and territories with high rates of senior poverty: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico.

Mission: As AARP's charitable affiliate, AARP Foundation creates and advances effective solutions to reduce poverty for and with older adults. Through grantmaking, they collaborate with organizations to advance projects that can become sustainable solutions to the challenges facing older adults living with low income.

Focus Areas - What They Fund

Generating Income/Earnings

  • Grants that increase income or earnings for older adults with low income

  • Workforce programs that provide upskilling or reskilling opportunities

  • Work-based learning opportunities or other pathways that help older workers gain skills needed for high-quality employment
  • Gaining Access to Benefits

  • Grants that help older adults with low income secure benefits

  • Benefits that enable older adults to support their health and wellbeing by reducing the financial burden of essential expenses (health care, housing, food)
  • Securing Refunds/Credits

  • Grants that help older taxpayers secure refunds and credits they've earned

  • Free tax preparation services

  • Assistance applying for property tax relief

  • Help eligible taxpayers access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Supporting Disaster Relief

  • When natural disasters strike, AARP Foundation distributes grants to local organizations

  • Support includes immediate relief (food, water, shelter) and long-term support

  • Assistance with home repair, legal aid, and financial assistance for seniors affected by disasters
  • Target Population

    • Vulnerable older adults facing economic challenges
    • Particular attention to removing obstacles that may prevent access to resources and opportunities

    AARP Foundation does not have a set Request For Application (RFA) schedule and does not accept unsolicited applications.

    To Apply:

    1. Sign up for the distribution list for updates on future grant opportunities
    2. Monitor email notifications for announcements of specific Request for Proposal (RFP) opportunities
    3. When opportunities are announced, organizations can access the Fluxx grants portal to submit applications
