Overview

California Department of Education The California Department of Education (CDE) is a state agency responsible for overseeing and supporting California’s public education system, serving millions of students across thousands of schools. Its mission is to provide leadership, assistance, oversight, and resources to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality, world-class education from early childhood through adulthood. The Department envisions that all California students achieve the highest levels of academic knowledge, applied learning, and performance skills to succeed in careers and contribute to society. Its funding and program priorities focus on advancing educational equity, improving student achievement, addressing learning gaps, supporting whole-child development (including social-emotional well-being), strengthening educator capacity, and promoting innovative, collaborative programs that prepare students to thrive in a diverse, global, and interconnected world. Migrant Education Program: California Mini-Corps Program The funding will establish a network of program sites across the state that collaborate with local Migrant Education Program (MEP) subgrantees to place college tutors in classrooms to support migratory students that are academically at-risk and demonstrate a priority for service. In addition, the applicant will hire bilingual (Spanish) college students who are strongly interested in pursuing a teaching career and provide training and support to pursue a teaching career. Pursuant to the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015, Title I, Part C, the purpose of the MEP is to ensure that all migratory students can meet the same challenging state academic standards that all children are expected to meet. Funding supports high quality comprehensive educational programs to help overcome educational disruption, cultural and language barriers, social isolation, varying health related needs and other factors that inhibit the ability of migratory children to succeed in schools. Funding through the application process supports the development of a statewide college tutoring program for migratory students in transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade.
