Background:

  • First awarded in 2024 (marked the first time the Foundation awarded a grant of this size from its unrestricted funds since founding in 1987)

  • Selection process: The Foundation solicited proposals from Winona-area nonprofits addressing the top two community needs (mental health support and housing), narrowed the pool to three finalists, and selected the recipient through a competitive process

  • Example Award: In 2024, the Impact Grant was awarded to Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center (HVMHC) to expand their Supportive Scattered Housing Program for adults with mental health and substance use disorders. The funds enabled:

  • Hiring of a new full-time Housing Specialist

  • Formation of new partnerships with Winona landlords

  • Addition of six housing units to the program
