The Community Foundation for Western Iowa was established in 2008 with the help of the Iowa West Foundation and four founding board members: Bobbette Behrens, Dean Fischer, Marie Knedler, and Kelly Summy. The Foundation is a tax-exempt public charity, 501(c)(3), that serves thousands of people who share a common interest in improving the quality of life in western Iowa. Through the Community Foundation, individuals, families, businesses and organizations can create permanent charitable funds that help their communities meet the challenges of changing times. The foundation invests and administers these charitable funds. The Community Foundation is overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens and run by professionals with expertise in identifying the needs of their community. Peterson Foundation The Henry K. Peterson Foundation annually provides grants to nonprofit organizations who, as part of their stated mission, provide services to the disabled population of Southwest Iowa. The Foundation was established in honor of Henry K. Peterson (1884-1966), a notable figure from Council Bluffs, Iowa, who was a lawyer, city attorney, Congressional candidate, chair of the City Planning Commission, and later a justice on the Iowa Supreme Court for ten years. The foundation awards approximately $10,000 annually during its fall grant cycle to support its mission.
