Overview: A specialized fellowship supported by the James P. Geiss and Margaret Y. Hsu Foundation to support scholars working in the field of Chinese history, particularly the Ming Dynasty and related periods.

• Primary Focus: Ming Dynasty China (1368–1644)
• Related Areas: Predecessors and successors of the Ming Dynasty, contemporaries in geographic areas with which the Ming interacted
• Historical Scope: Scholars may work on projects examining related periods (e.g., Uighur Buddhism from 800 to 1800 CE)

• Named for: James Geiss (1950–2000), Ming Dynasty scholar, and Margaret Hsu (established and led foundation 2001-2017)
• Mission: Encourage and support scholarly research and interpretation of the Ming Dynasty through awards for research, publications, conferences, lectures, and exhibitions
