Overview: A specialized fellowship program providing residential fellowships specifically for scholars from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Established through a $1,147,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (April 4, 2018).

Program Details

• Number of Fellows: Four HBCU scholars per year
• Program Duration: Three-year cycles
• Start Date: 2019-20 academic year

Purpose

Addresses structural challenges that make it difficult for HBCU humanities faculty to take time away from their home institutions to focus on research. The Center previously had only a handful of HBCU faculty participating in its programs.

Support Provided

• Residential fellowship at the Center
• Individual research project funding
• Replacement faculty hiring costs at home institutions (funded by the grant)
• Access to the Center's intellectual community and research support infrastructure

Eligibility

• Faculty from Historically Black Colleges and Universities
• Humanities scholars
• Must be able to participate in residential fellowship at the Center

• Current initiative focuses on addressing equity in humanities research support
