G. Gerald Hendley Family Scholarship

Geographic Scope: Wilkes County, North Carolina

Eligible Schools: Students and graduates of East Wilkes, North Wilkes, West Wilkes, Wilkes Central, and Wilkes Early College High School

Eligibility: Applicants must be pursuing careers in medical-related fields

Award Amount: Approximately $75,000 awarded annually; individual awards vary depending on application and interview skills. No predetermined number of scholarship winners.

Selection Criteria:

• Grade point average (GPA)
• American College Testing (ACT)
• Rank in class
• Community involvement
• Extracurricular activities
• Curriculum choice leading to a profession in the medical field
• Character
• Demonstrated leadership ability
• Demonstrated communication skills through interview
• Financial need (considered when other criteria are equal)
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills through interview and formal writing sample

Organization Background: The Wilkes Education Foundation is a private, non-profit, IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt endowment corporation dedicated to promoting excellence in education in the Wilkes County Schools.

Application Process

1. Complete the G. Gerald Hendley Family Scholarship Application form
2. Attach required documents:
   • Official and complete transcript
   • Photograph
   • Major must be MEDICAL FIELD related
3. Submit to: Wilkes Education Foundation 613 Cherry Street North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 Attn: WEF Scholarship Committee – Loretta Shumate
4. Notification: Recipients will be notified by mail

• Narrative evaluation of nominee complete
• Student essay complete
• Current transcript
• ACT scores
• FAFSA
• SAR (Free Application For Student Aid-Student Aid Report)
• Picture attached
• Guidance counselor has reviewed the application with signature

Special Instructions for College Students

• Do not fill out the principal page
• List any college participation on the activities page
• Attach a copy of college grades (start to present)
• No SAT or ACT scores required
• Signature of guidance counselor not required
