Established in 1989, the CIRC now includes over 100 scientists, clinicians, and research staff from around the globe. The mission of the Civitan International Research Center is to improve the well-being and the quality of life of individuals and families affected by intellectual and developmental disabilities. Pilot Grant and Travel Award Programs We support neurodevelopment research through the following pilot grant and award programs. Emerging Scholars Award The Emerging Scholar Award provides research funding for clinical or basic science research related to brain development for trainees at the graduate student and postdoctoral fellow levels. Part of Civitan International Research Center's mission is to foster the next generation of scientists studying brain development. The Emerging Scholars Awards are made possible by donations from Civitan International, matching funds from the Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and UAB’s University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers (UWIRC) program. Proposals for the Emerging Scholars program are requested from across the UAB campus for clinical or basic science research projects aimed at enhancing our current understanding of normal and abnormal brain development, cognition, autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, and mental retardation, or the effects of exposure to environmental toxins on the development of the brain.Eligibility
