Overview

Emergency Food & Shelter Program (EFSP)

Overview: United Way of the Brazos Valley serves as the Local Board Chair for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP). The Local Board is charged with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas and to help people with economic emergencies.

Funding Source: Federal funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program

Geographic Scope: Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, and Washington County

Purpose: Distribute funds to expand capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas and help people with economic emergencies

Important Limitations

EFSP funds are NOT for:

  • Disaster-related economic assistance

  • Economic assistance for circumstances that are the immediate result of a disaster situation (fires, floods, tornadoes, etc.)
  • Fund Distribution: The Local Board determines how funds are distributed based on amounts funded in each county by FEMA
