Community Self-Determination Grant

Overview: Significant, flexible, multi-year funding supporting community-based and community-driven sustainable solutions in defense, development, and decolonization of Indigenous peoples and lands.

Geographic Scope: Turtle Island (North America) including continental U.S., Canada, Mexico, Islands of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands

Eligible Applicants:

  • Tribes

  • First Nations

  • Inuit and Metis communities

  • Indigenous-led nonprofit organizations

  • Community-based efforts (prioritized over national organizations)
  • Focus Areas - Three Core Strategies:
    1. Defend: Protecting land and water
    2. Develop: Developing sustainable food systems
    3. Decolonize: Revitalizing Indigenous languages and lifeways

    Award Details:

  • $100,000 per year with 2-year commitment

  • Maximum grant: $200,000 over two years

  • $4 million in total funding available

  • Flexible, unrestricted funding (general operating support, power and capacity building, capital support)
