Bush Charles Helzberg Study Abroad Scholarship

Purpose: Honors Bush Charles Helzberg's legacy by empowering UA alumni currently in college to study abroad. Provides funds to cover out-of-pocket costs related to eligible study abroad programs. Awards are based on unmet need up to $3,000.

Geographic Scope: University Academy alumni (Kansas City, MO area)

Applicant Requirements:

• Graduated high school from University Academy
• Current full-time college student
• Cumulative college GPA of 2.5 or above
• In good standing with UA Foundation and current college (no holds or debts)

Study Abroad Program Requirements:

• Offered through accredited college or university
• Must have a learning or service component
• Preference given to programs that include college credit

Application & Selection Timeline:

• Applications accepted on rolling first-come-first-served basis
• Fiscal year runs July 1st – June 30th
• Recommended: Apply at least 3 months prior to travel
• Minimum requirement: Submit at least 3 weeks before travel

Selection Criteria:

• Student academic performance
• Quality of student application and essays
• Program quality, fit, and cost
• Demonstrated financial need

• Award determined after applying for all school/program aid
• Covers out-of-pocket costs (unmet need)
• Interview scheduled with BCHS alumni advisory group and key UA staff

Application & Selection Process

1. Apply and be accepted to an approved study abroad program
2. Apply for aid/scholarships available through the school or program in addition to BCHS
3. Complete the BCHS application including:
- Essay questions
- Program details
- Budget breakdown
4. Interview scheduled with:
- BCHS alumni advisory group
- Key UA staff
5. Selection decision based on:
- Student academic performance
- Application and essay quality
- Program quality, fit, and cost
- Demonstrated need

Submission Timeline

• Recommended: Apply at least 3 months before travel
