Overview

Black Philanthropy Circle (BPC) Grants

Status: Active, annual grant program (inaugural cycle was 2022)

Geographic Scope: Indiana University system (all IU campuses)

Background: Established in 2018, the BPC has committed $316,150 in funding to Indiana University projects as of 2023. The program seeks to make Indiana University more welcoming, equitable, and accessible for the Black community.

Mission: The BPC believes diversity, inclusion, and equity are indispensable elements of an education and is unequivocally committed to taking a leadership role in making an education at Indiana University universally accessible to the Black community.

Eligible Applicants: All Indiana University community members, including students, faculty, and staff with a vision and capacity to manage grant money

Funding Focus:

  • Projects that make IU more welcoming, equitable, and accessible for the Black community

  • Continuous improvement of recruitment, retention, and support of Black students, faculty, and staff

  • Supporting grants, education, research, programs, and career opportunities

  • Coordination and strengthening of engagement of Black alumni and friends of the university
  • Award Range: $4,000 - $50,000

  • 2022 grant cycle: First major funding round (cumulative $175,000 committed since 2019)

  • 2023 grant cycle: Over $89,000 awarded, 11 of 21 applications partially or fully funded
