Overview: A newly established challenge grant fund designed to support the sustained success and growth of the Speech, Debate, & Drama program at Miami High School.

Challenge Grant Amount: $125,000 seed funding (provided by Deacon Turner, Speech & Debate alum)

Fundraising Goal: Raise additional $125,000 in pledges and donations

Target Annual Distribution: $25,000 per year to Speech, Debate & Drama program (pending goal achievement)

Time Horizon: 10-year funding span

Purpose:

Honor Barbara Smith's legacy and commitment to student excellence

Support Speech, Debate, and Drama students with resources and experiences

Broaden student horizons and build confidence

Accelerate and deepen program potential under current coach Kaylea Hutson-Miller

Background on Barbara Smith:
Barbara Smith set high standards for excellence in the Speech, Debate, & Drama program that endure to this day. She went to great lengths to ensure her "Speech kids" had resources and experiences to develop into their best selves. Her legacy was celebrated at a student reunion in July, bringing together many of her former students.
