Action Grants

Overview: Action Grants support non-profit cultural organizations in planning and implementing humanities-based public programming that promotes dialogue, critical thinking, and reflection. Projects must connect audiences to their communities and explore themes important to local communities.

Geographic Scope: New York State (all 10 regions)

Eligible Applicants: Tax-exempt non-profit organizations

Focus Areas:

Public programs such as exhibits, panels, and workshops

Projects promoting exchange of knowledge, skills, stories, and ideas

Themes including African Diaspora history, Indigenous history and culture, environmentalism, immigrant contributions, incarceration narratives, film and media

Award Amount: $6,500 - $10,000 per grant

Program Changes (as of 2025): As of December 1, 2024, Action Grants were consolidated. The previous separate "Vision" and "Quick" Grants were discontinued and consolidated into a single "Action" grant program. The new Action grant will organize grantees into theme-specific cohorts for collaborative learning and network building. Revised guidelines became available in March 2025.

Status: Active as of 2025, though funding from NEH was terminated in April 2026 due to DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) budget cuts.
