Overview

Action Grants

Overview: Action Grants support non-profit cultural organizations in planning and implementing humanities-based public programming that promotes dialogue, critical thinking, and reflection. Projects must connect audiences to their communities and explore themes important to local communities.

Geographic Scope: New York State (all 10 regions)

Eligible Applicants: Tax-exempt non-profit organizations

Focus Areas:

  • Public programs such as exhibits, panels, and workshops

  • Projects promoting exchange of knowledge, skills, stories, and ideas

  • Themes including African Diaspora history, Indigenous history and culture, environmentalism, immigrant contributions, incarceration narratives, film and media
  • Award Amount: $6,500 - $10,000 per grant

Program Changes (as of 2025): As of December 1, 2024, Action Grants were consolidated. The previous separate "Vision" and "Quick" Grants were discontinued and consolidated into a single "Action" grant program. The new Action grant will organize grantees into theme-specific cohorts for collaborative learning and network building. Revised guidelines became available in March 2025.

Status: Active as of 2025, though funding from NEH was terminated in April 2026 due to DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) budget cuts.
