The Richman Foundation Inc

The foundation’s mission is to support services and programs that strengthen the Baltimore community and create opportunities for individuals, especially children, to grow, prosper, and lead meaningful lives in a safe and healthy environment.

Its website describes four priority areas. Early learning and family supports include high-quality learning environments for children from birth to age five, particularly those emphasizing literacy, and programs that strengthen parents and young families. Education priorities include programs that improve literacy, math skills, and academic achievement for K–12 students; prepare students for college or careers; and engage parents and caregivers. The foundation also considers a limited number of requests from individual schools. Health priorities include services for young children that address toxic stress and trauma, mental health supports for young people from kindergarten through college and early careers, and maternal prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum health and mental health. Jewish causes are considered in Baltimore and around the world.

The foundation says it supports charitable, educational, and other organizations described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It generally considers organizations based in Baltimore; Jewish Causes is an exception. The website says it accepts applications from prospective grantees in Baltimore City only, except for applicants under Jewish Causes. It also says it does not accept requests for capital support at this time.

Examples of grantees’ work include The Family Tree, which describes its mission as preventing child abuse, connecting caring communities, and building strong families; the Fund for Educational Excellence, which works to improve education for children in Baltimore City Public Schools; and EduCare DC, which aims to close the opportunity gap for young children living in poverty. These are the grantees’ stated missions, not the foundation’s.
