Youth Council Grants

Overview: Grants designed to inspire youth leadership, connection, and engagement in the third space (out-of-school time). Supports programs in starting or expanding youth councils and creating participatory budgeting processes for youth-driven projects in their communities.

Geographic Scope: Chittenden, Washington, and Orange Counties, Vermont (where Northfield Savings Bank Foundation has branch locations)

Funding Source: Northfield Savings Bank Foundation

Award Amount: $5,000 per grant to operate and support youth council participation

Target Population: Middle and high school students in third space programs

Grant Purpose:

  • Support formation of local youth councils

  • Fund workshops and training for staff

  • Provide stipends for youth council members

  • Budget for youth-led initiatives through participatory budgeting

  • Up to $5,000 for participatory budget process to fund local youth-led projects
  • Objectives:

  • Help communities see youth as a resource

  • Increase opportunities for innovation and inclusion

  • Support economic vitality

  • Build stronger democracy

  • Increase youth empowerment and connection to local communities

    Application Process

    Eligibility Requirements:

  • Third space programs (out-of-school time programs)

  • Serving middle and/or high school students

  • Located in Chittenden, Washington, or Orange Counties
  • Grant Requirements (Mandatory):

  • Facilitate a youth council that meets twice monthly (mandatory Vermont Afterschool workshops count toward meeting time)

  • Participate in five mandatory workshops hosted by Vermont Afterschool

  • Complete participatory budgeting and community voting processes with youth council

  • Collect photos and stories of youth-led projects

  • Evaluate participatory budget process and report outcomes
  • Required Workshops/Meetings:
    1. Introduction & Orientation Meeting: October 27, 2021
    2. Determining Youth Grant Focus Areas: November 18, 2021
    3. Idea Development & Action Planning: January 12, 2022
    4. Youth Project Community Voting: January 26, 2022
    5. Celebration Event: May 2022
