Overview: A major state grant program to expand access to summer enrichment opportunities for K-12 youth across Vermont. Jointly announced by Governor Phil Scott, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Vermont Afterschool in 2021.

Geographic Scope: Statewide Vermont (13 counties)

Funding Source: Federal dollars secured by Senator Bernie Sanders

Total Program Funding: $3.85 million (2021 round)

Number of Awards: Approximately 100 programs awarded in first round

Program Results (2021 round):

Created 31,650 new summer program slots

Led to 238 new weeks of summer programming

Decreased average weekly cost to families by $162

Summer camps

Libraries

Municipalities

Teen centers

Non-profit social services organizations

School-based programs

Community organizations

Purpose: To expand the number of weeks and slots, as well as increase affordability and accessibility of summer programs

Key Priorities:

Create free or low-cost programming for eligible students

Address transportation needs

Expand employment options for older students

Serve all children, including those with disabilities or unique needs

Help kids recover from pandemic isolation

Support safe reconnection with peers and communities

2021 Award Features:

55 recipients offered transportation

100 recipients offered low or no-cost programming for eligible students

90 recipients ensuring access for all kids, including those with disabilities
