Overview

HESAA, the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, is the only New Jersey state agency with the sole mission of providing students and families with financial and informational resources to pursue education beyond high school. Our Mission is to make education affordable. World Trade Center Scholarship The World Trade Center (WTC) Scholarship supports the dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were victims of the terrorist attacks against the U.S. on September 11, 2001. This scholarship benefits: Dependent children and surviving spouses of New Jersey residents who were killed or died as a result of injuries sustained by the terrorist attacks. The award also benefits the dependents of those who died as a result of illness caused by exposure to the attack sites.Those incurring the full-time cost of attendance at an eligible institution, having lost the financial resources of a parent or spouse, are deemed to have financial need. The WTC Board sets the amount of the scholarship each summer for the next academic year. The scholarship amount cannot exceed the actual tuition, fees, room and board charged. Scholarship amounts may change as a result of changes in program funding and students’ other available financial assistance. Recipients may attend any Title IV - eligible college or university in New Jersey or out-of-state.

Students must: Be a child or spouse of an individual who was a NJ resident on September 11, 2001 who was:killed in the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001died as a result of injuries received in the attacksdied as a result of illness caused by exposure to the attack sites declared missing and officially presumed dead as a result of the attacksBe citizens, eligible non-citizens or eligible to file the NJ Alternative Financial Aid Application.Be a full-time undergraduate studentMaintain satisfactory academic progressNot have received the maximum allowable number of payments. For example: eight semesters of payment for a regular four-year degree program; five semesters of payment for a regular two-year degree program. Eligibility to apply is limited to eight years from the date of the child’s (i.e. the child of the deceased) high school graduation and eight years from the date of death for the spouse (i.e. the spouse of the deceased).
