NOTE: The Foundation has a year-round, rolling application process; there are no deadlines. however, the last day to submit an application to be considered for the calendar year is the deadline listed above. Applications are reviewed by the board on a quarterly basis. Striving for a future where creativity is nurtured, democracy is upheld, and gun violence is no more. The William Talbott Hillman Foundation supports Pittsburgh- and NYC-based art institutions, as well as national efforts around guns and civic engagement with a focus on young people and BIPOC communities. Priorities In Pittsburgh, PA and New York, NY, the Foundation prioritizes innovative arts programming and the promotion of photography as a fine arts medium. In New York, its Affirmation Arts affiliate prioritizes safety nets for working artists, art education, and regional museums in under-resourced communities. Nationally, the Foundation focuses on strengthening gun laws, preventing gun-related suicides, and driving voter and civic engagement, particularly among young people and people of color.

Applicant organizations must be classified as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and as public charities under Section 509(a) of that code.         The geographic focus of the Foundation’s grantmaking program is New York City and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.         The Board reserves the right to approve grants in other locations at its discretion.         While the Foundation entertains requests from a wide variety of organizations, most grants are initiated at the direction of the program staff and Board of Trustees of the Foundation.
