Overview: The Walt Garrison Top Hand Award is a $2,500 scholarship presented at the College National Finals Rodeo to honor college rodeo athletes who exemplify exceptional qualities.

Award Criteria: Awarded for loyalty, determination, integrity, and leadership

Selection Process:

  • Each of the NIRA's 11 geographic regions nominates one rodeo athlete

  • One winner is selected from the regional nominees
  • Background: Named after Walt Garrison, a former professional steer wrestler and professional football player with the Dallas Cowboys who started numerous scholarship programs to support college rodeo athletes.

    Geographic Scope: United States - all NIRA regions eligible

    Eligibility: College rodeo athletes who are NIRA members
