Overview
Walmart's community giving runs through Walmart.org, which combines direct corporate giving from Walmart Inc. with the Walmart Foundation. For most local nonprofits, the entry point is the Spark Good Local Grants program: every Walmart store, Sam's Club, and distribution center in the U.S. can award grants of $250 to $5,000 to organizations serving its surrounding community.
What makes Spark Good unusual:
- Decisions are made locally. You apply to a specific store or club, and its management reviews requests from its own service area — there's no national committee between you and the decision.
- Volume over size. Awards are small, but Walmart makes tens of thousands of them every year, and repeat funding year over year is common for organizations with a good store relationship.
- Fast and low-lift. The application is short — a description of your organization, what the funds will do, and which store you're asking.
Beyond local grants, Walmart.org makes larger national and market-level grants in focus areas like hunger relief (a major Feeding America partner), workforce opportunity, and disaster response — but those are invitation-only. Local grants are the open door.
Eligibility
Spark Good Local Grants are open to:
- 501(c)(3) public charities verified in Walmart's system
- Government entities (including public schools and libraries)
- K–12 public and nonprofit private schools, community colleges, and universities
- Faith-based organizations providing broad community services (a food pantry run by a church, for example)
Requirements to apply:
- A Spark Good account on walmart.com/nonprofits
- Verification through Walmart's third-party partner, Deed
- Your organization must serve the same area as the store or club you're requesting funds from
Not eligible: 501(c)(4), (c)(6), and (c)(19) organizations (civic leagues, chambers, volunteer fire companies), individuals, and organizations that can't pass verification.
How to Apply
- Create a Spark Good account at walmart.com/nonprofits and complete Deed verification — allow a couple of weeks the first time.
- Pick your store or club. Choose the location(s) whose service area matches yours. You can apply to more than one, with separate applications.
- Apply during an open cycle. The program runs three cycles per year — Feb 1 – Apr 15, May 1 – Jul 15, and Aug 1 – Nov 30. Applications are reviewed after each cycle closes.
- Keep the ask concrete. Store managers fund specific, visible local impact — "$3,000 for 200 backpacks of weekend meals" beats a general operating request.
- Build the relationship. Invite store management to see your work; stores that know you fund you again. Registering with Spark Good also unlocks round-up donations and space requests (fundraising outside the store).
