Volcanic & Magmatic Studies Group: Student Bursaries Grant

The Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group is offering Student Bursaries of up to £500 for doctoral researchers. These funds support travel to conferences, fieldwork, or laboratory facilities. Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a UK or Irish PhD program, have presented at a VMSG meeting, and not have previously received a bursary. The initiative aims to assist those facing unexpected challenges in their research funding or seeking to expand their studies beyond original projects.

The Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group welcomes applications for travel funding (up to £750) from doctoral researchers who wish to present their work at a national or international conference/workshop (either as virtual or in-person attendance), carry out fieldwork for their research, or travel to use laboratory facilities in the UK or overseas (please note only travel costs are eligible, not instrument time or bench fees).
Statement of Intent
VMSG Student Bursaries are intended to support students:
Affected by unforeseen circumstances that have impacted the direction or scope of the research project or the use of funding.Who do not have access to other sources of research funding, or whose funds are limited in a way that restricts their opportunities.To exploit new opportunities that will extend and build on their primary PhD research, beyond their budgeted project.

Eligibility

Be enrolled in a PhD programme at a UK or Irish UniversityHave given either an oral or poster presentation at a VMSG annual meeting prior to the application deadline in the round in which funding is requested.Not previously been awarded a VMSG student travel bursaryThe application is for a forthcoming conference/workshop, lab work or fieldwork. No retrospective applications will be considered.If you are applying for a conference, you must submit a draft abstract with your application (even if this is not yet submitted to the conference)The research topic falls within the remit of VMSG.Grants are non-transferable and must be used for the purpose stated on the submitted form. Awardees who are unable to use the award for the purpose set out in their application must relinquish it.
