Overview

NOTE: Online Application Part I: To be completed by the student, the application summarizes the topic, objectives, plans, and budget for the proposed research and the background of the applicant; applicants must adequately explain their proposals, provide informative documentation, and present the proposals under their own name. Part II: To be completed by the appraiser, is a required evaluation by a faculty member familiar with the applicant's qualifications and the significance of the proposed research. The faculty member will complete and submit the appraisal of applicant form directly to SEG to maintain confidentiality. Deadline for submission is the same for both applications and appraisals. Late submissions for either one will not be accepted, no exceptions. It is your responsibility to make sure your advisor submits their portion on time.Overview Students represent a core group of SEG members who play an integral role in advancing economic geology through research and innovation. Spread around the world, these students share an interest and the willingness to get more involved in this field through technical and social activities. Being a student member of SEG provides numerous benefits, and SEG welcomes their contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Society. Support SEG is committed to supporting the academic and professional development of undergraduate and graduate students around the globe by promoting and encouraging engagement in a variety of events. Workshops, conferences, short courses, and field trips all facilitate learning, networking, and sharing experiences between students and other members within SEG. Funding is available to individual students through research grants, fellowships, field trip programs and mapping courses. Student Research Grants Individual Student Research Grants (SRG) are for one year and typically range from US$1,000 to US$5,000. These grants support graduate student research projects leading to master's or doctoral degrees, and exceptional Bachelor's Honors projects. Students in mineral resource study programs throughout the world are eligible and encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

General InformationAwards are intended to fund specific expenses related to student research projects leading to advanced degrees.Awards are competitive and based upon project merit and qualification of the applicant.Applicants must describe what the project is; why the research is important, and how it is to be done.An estimate of expenses for the project must be included in the budget section of application.If the funds have not been used by April 30 of the following year, the grant recipient should request permission for an extension and submit a progress report.Applications may be submitted for any one of the awards, but will be considered for all awards.Applicants who apply for and are awarded a current calendar year GSF Grant are also eligible to apply for the current calendar year SRG.Guidelines for Use of FundsGrants are made to offset specific research expenses. Successful applicants are expected to carry out their own field observations, laboratory work and any other work related to the proposed research, insofar as possible. Field and laboratory work should be carried out as economically as possible, consistent with good scientific procedures.Grants are awarded only to individual students, not to institutions or faculty members, and are primarily for research leading to an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree. In special circumstances, senior undergraduate research is eligible for support.In general, grants can be used for:travel expenses to and from your field research areayour field expenses, including living expensesexpendable supplies and expenses necessary to complete your researchanalytical and laboratory expenses required to complete your researchtravel/accomodation to a meeting to present the results of your researchExpenses for which funding is being requested must be specifically identified and itemized in the application.Funds awarded are expected to be spent before April 30 of the following calendar year; exceptions must be approved in writing by the Chair of the Student Research Grants Committee.Funds are to be expended only for the purposes stated, and in accordance with the budget presented in the application. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Preference will be given to those applicants who are SEG Student Members.

Ineligibility

Research projects extending beyond the second year of an M.Sc. program or the third year of a Ph.D. program are not funded.Grants may NOT be used for:purchase of ordinary field equipment, such as a Brunton compass, hand lens, geology hammer etc.purchase of computer hardware or software and related supportliving expenses of assistants or your familyattendance at professional meetings or conferences (except to present your research results)travel/accommodation to undertake laboratory researchpreparation of thesis (typing, copying, binding, diagrams, photos)reimbursement for completed workUniversity administrative overhead, including tuition
