Overview

Urban League of Portland Dickson Scott Scholarship

Overview: The Urban League of Portland Dickson Scott Scholarship honors Nella Mae Dickson, a longtime partner and supporter of the organization who dedicated her life to educating and empowering youth and young adults.

Award: Two scholarships of $10,000 each are awarded annually:

  • One scholarship for incoming freshmen under age 25 already accepted at a school

  • One scholarship for a current college student
  • Geographic Scope: Oregon and Southwest Washington

    Eligibility:

  • Admitted and enrolled college students

  • Past or current Urban League of Portland (ULPDX) program engagement

  • Must be able to prove residency in Oregon or SW Washington

  • Must provide proof of enrollment or acceptance

  • Must respond to application questions
  • Priority Eligibility (in order of priority):
    1. Current or past ULPDX Youth Academy participants who are actively involved
    2. Current or past ULPDX program participants
    3. Dependents of past participants
    4. Current or future HBCU students
    5. ULPDX volunteers, members, interns, or employees
    6. Applicants who identify as Black with a connection to Urban League programs
    7. All other applicants

    About Nella Mae Dickson:

  • Graduated from Dixie High School

  • Bachelor of Science from Butler College in Tyler, TX

  • Master's Degree from Texas Southern University in Houston, TX

  • Taught at Carver High School in Amarillo, Texas

  • Taught at Cispus Job Corp Center in Washington and Timberlake Job Corp Center in Oregon

  • Retired from USDA Forest Service after 39 years of service

  • Volunteered extensively at Urban League of Portland tutoring students in math and reading

  • Proof of enrollment or acceptance at a college/university

  • Responses to application questions

  • One application per person accepted

  • Current or past ULPDX Youth Program participation

  • Current or past ULPDX program participation (or dependent status)

  • Current or future HBCU enrollment status

  • ULPDX volunteer, member, intern, or employee experience

  • Self-identification as Black with connection to Urban League programs
