Overview

United Energy Scholarship

Overview: United Cooperative Services awards scholarships to assist the educational pursuits of members and their families. More than 1,000 students have received United scholarships totaling more than $1.5 million in award money.

Geographic Scope: United Cooperative Services service area (Texas)

Award Details:

  • Top 3 Winners: $10,000 (1st place), $5,000 (2nd place), $4,000 (3rd place)

  • Remaining 12 Recipients: $2,000 each

  • Total Awards: 15 scholarships annually

  • Payment: Two installments per academic year
  • Eligibility - Graduating High School Seniors:

  • Must be an active member of United OR claimed as dependent of parents/legal guardians who are active United members at principal residence

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA on 4.0 scale

  • Must meet general entrance requirements at accredited four-year university, junior college, or TEA approved trade school

  • Must provide high school transcript signed by counselor

  • Must submit one-page typed personal essay

  • Must provide one letter of recommendation

  • Must submit proof of income (W-2, etc.)
  • Eligibility - Current College Students:

  • Must be active member of United OR claimed as dependent of parents/legal guardians who are active United members at principal residence

  • Minimum 2.0 post-secondary GPA on 4.0 scale

  • Must be enrolled full-time (minimum 12 semester hours) at accredited four-year university, junior college, or TEA approved trade school

  • Must submit one-page typed personal essay

  • Must provide one letter of recommendation

  • Must submit proof of income (W-2, etc.)

  • NOT available to graduate students or students who have achieved bachelor's degree
  • Judging Criteria:

  • Financial need: 60% weight

  • Leadership, community service, and school activities: 40% weight

  • Two rounds: Initial scoring + in-person interview (required on July 9, 2026)
  • Post-Award Requirements:

  • Must remain enrolled as full-time student (minimum 12 semester hours)

  • Must maintain minimum 2.0 GPA

  • Must provide proof of enrollment and grades each semester

  • Scholarship funds used only for tuition, fees, books, supplies, or equipment—NOT housing or living expenses

  • Board members, employees, and their immediate families ineligible

  • May apply multiple times but can only receive scholarship once

  • Must attend mandatory in-person interview and banquet on July 9, 2026

    Application Process

    Timeline:

  • Applications accepted: May 1 through June 1 annually

  • Interview and banquet: July 9, 2026 (mandatory for finalists)
  • Step 1: Complete Initial Application
    1. Visit www.ucs.net
    2. Click "Apply Here" button
    3. Complete all sections of the online application form

    Step 2: Gather Required Documents
    All applicants must provide:

  • High school transcript signed and dated by high school counselor (certifying GPA accuracy)

  • One-page typed personal essay explaining:

  • - Community and school service
    - Financial need
    - Seriousness of purpose
  • One letter of recommendation (from teacher, administrator, etc.)

  • Proof of income (parents/guardians): W-2, 1040, or similar
  • Step 3: Upload Documents
    1. Return to scholarship page
    2. Complete "Upload Scholarship Documents" form
    3. Submit all PDF documents and supporting materials electronically

    Step 4: Submit by Deadline

  • Both application AND required documents must be received by June 1

  • Electronic applications only—no paper submissions before/after stated dates
  • Alternative Submission for Supplemental Documents:

  • Interview Process (for selected finalists):

  • 15 finalists participate in second-round interviews on July 9, 2026

  • In-person attendance mandatory

  • Panel judges ask three standard questions about:

  • 1. Why applicant should be selected and expected gains
    2. Difference between electric cooperative and investor-owned utility
    3. Knowledge of United Cooperative Services (counties served, board, ownership, programs)

  • Applicants may email scholarships@ucs.net to confirm online application and documents were received

  • Applications submitted anonymously with four-digit applicant numbers (no names) during judging
