Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program Grant

The Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program, managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), provides crucial funding for diverse transportation projects. These include pedestrian and bicycle facilities, improvements for public transportation access, environmental enhancements, and safe routes to schools. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this program continues to support innovative community projects aimed at enhancing mobility and safety. The funding ensures the growth and maintenance of Pennsylvania's transportation infrastructure through 2026.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) oversees programs and policies affecting highways, urban and rural public transportation, airports, railroads, ports, and waterways.
Over 75% of PennDOT's annual budget is invested in Pennsylvania's approximately 122,000 miles of state and local highways and 32,000 state and local bridges. PennDOT also administers the state's 11.8 million vehicle registrations and 10.2 million driver's licenses and IDs, and oversees safety and emission inspection programs.
The federal Transpo​rtation Alternatives Set-Aside (TASA) provides funding for projects and activities defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility, community improvement activities, environmental mitigation, trails that serve a transportation purpose, and safe routes to school projects.​ The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), enacted as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), continues to fund the TA Set-Aside through 2026.
