Overview
The Leandro P. Rizzuto Scholarship
Funder: American Society of the Italian Legions of Merit (ASILM)
Geographic Scope: United States (applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents)
Study Location: U.S. accredited colleges or universities located in Italy
Award Purpose: To support outstanding Italian American students pursuing up to one year of study at accredited universities in Italy, commencing in the Summer/Fall of each academic year.
Eligibility Requirements
- Italian Heritage: Have at least one parent or two grandparents or great-grandparents of Italian ancestry
- Citizenship Status: Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Academic Status: Be a graduating high school student or college student
- Enrollment: Be accepted or enrolled on a full-time basis in a U.S. accredited undergraduate college or university located in Italy
- Academic Performance: Have and maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 (or equivalent) and demonstrate academic excellence
- Character & Service: Demonstrate community or civic interest and be of high moral character
- Financial Need: Demonstrate financial need
- Cultural Engagement: Take steps to learn more about Italian heritage

Application Process
Deadline: Second Thursday in May of each year (2026: May 14)
Required Materials
All completed application forms with supporting documentation must be submitted by the deadline.
1. Application Form: Complete the official application form provided by the Scholarship Committee
2. Academic Transcripts: Provide high school or college transcript(s) containing at least two full years of grades and other academic information
3. Essay (Two-Part):
- Part 1: Why you would like to study at a U.S. accredited college or university located in Italy
- Part 2: What it means to be Italian American and why it is important to maintain your cultural roots
4. Letter of Recommendation: Submit a letter from a teacher or professor with whom you have had regular contact
5. Resume: Include academic background, extracurricular activities, organization memberships, and awards
6. Financial Information: Submit FAFSA Student Aid Summary
