About Us The Genetics Society is a registered charity and was founded in 1919 as the world’s first society devoted to the study of the mechanisms of inheritance. It is also one of the world's oldest "learned societies". Famous founder members included Edith Rebecca Saunders, William Bateson, JBS Haldane and AW Sutton. The Society is run by an elected committee comprising entirely volunteers from the scientific community. Genetics Society Membership includes over 2,000 of the UK's active professional geneticists, including teachers, researchers and students and is open to anyone with an interest in genetic research or teaching, or in the practical breeding of plants and animals. Summer Studentships Are you an undergraduate student who is thinking about a career in genetics, or curious to know what that might involve? We have grants available to support you to gain experience in any area of genetics by doing a research project during the summer holiday prior to the final year of your degree. The summer studentship grant includes: £300/week allowance for up to 8 weeksUp to £750 to cover host laboratory expensesA place on the 2-3 day expenses paid student Summer School WorkshopIf you need it, a Carer’s Award is also available to cover child care or other responsibility costs while you do the research and attend the summer school.Eligibility

The project should be realistic and achievable by you within an eight-week time frame for completion by the end of August.Both you and the group leader must be members of the Genetics Society.The Summer Studentship scheme is open to all undergraduate students, except those in their first or final year.The project must be based at a UK university.You must be able to attend the UK-based Summer School workshop at the end of the 8 weeks’ research. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member. Applicant and the group leader must be members of the Genetics Society.Ineligibility
