Program Overview

Salem Electric seeks enthusiastic high school students interested in business administration, finance, operations, or technology to serve as Student Directors and learn about board governance and the cooperative business model. Student directors who successfully meet program expectations receive a scholarship ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 based on their level of participation.

Important Note: Scholarship is NOT awarded if student director resigns or is terminated from the program.

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Student Status: Current high school or homeschooled sophomore or junior
  • Residency: Must live in Salem Electric service area
  • Ineligible: Students of Salem Electric board members and employees
  • Interest Areas: Business administration, finance, operations, or technology preferred

Program Expectations and Commitments

Student directors must successfully meet the following requirements:

1. Board Meeting Attendance
- Attend Salem Electric Board of Directors meetings September through April
- Attend annual membership meeting on May 4, 2027

2. Presentation Requirement
- Provide presentation about board experience at Salem Electric annual membership meeting on May 4, 2027

3. Newsletter Article
- Submit 200-225 word article about experience for Salem Electric Co-op Newsletter
- Deadline: May 4, 2027

  • Program Year: September through April (with final presentation/article due May 4, 2027)

- Completed Student Director Application
- One reference letter from an adult (not parent or legal guardian) attesting to character
- Acceptable references: Teachers, coaches, church members, employers, volunteer group leaders

3. Submit Application
