STI Screening and Prevention Grant

Geographic Scope: Statewide Arizona

Focus Areas:

• Increase screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea for females 14-24 years old
• Increase syphilis screenings for men and women 34 years of age and younger
• Sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and testing
• Address rising STI cases, particularly congenital syphilis

Key Findings/Context:

• CDC reported nearly 30% rise in chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis between 2015-2019
• Congenital syphilis cases nearly quadrupled during 2015-2019 period
• In Arizona, congenital syphilis cases rose more than sevenfold from 2016-2020, making Arizona second worst in nation
• Arizona's STI rates ranked 15th for gonorrhea and chlamydia in 2020, 6th for primary and secondary syphilis

Services Provided:

• Low or no-cost syphilis testing and treatment to all clients
• Additional funding for uninsured male and female clients ages 34 and younger
• Part of STI Screening Project, collaboration between AFHP-funded health centers and ADHS
