Overview

Scholarship Preservation Program (SPP)

Overview: A sponsorship program where donors commit to providing annual scholarships to Pre-K through 8th grade students attending Catholic Community Schools in Baltimore City.

Geographic Scope: Baltimore City, Maryland

Eligible Schools:

  • Archbishop Borders

  • Holy Angels

  • Cardinal Shehan

  • Saints James and John
  • Focus Areas: Educational support for economically disadvantaged families; provides tuition assistance to enable continued access to quality Catholic education.

    Scholarship Levels:

  • Star Pupil: $1,000 annually

  • Teacher's Helper: $2,000-$2,500 annually

  • Graduate: $5,000 annually

  • School Chums: $10,000 annually

  • Classmates: $25,000 annually

  • Create Your Own Scholarship: $1,000 and up
  • Eligibility:

  • Donors/sponsors can be individuals or groups

  • No contract required

  • Flexible payment arrangements available

  • Employers may provide matching funds

  • Multiple donors can team up to meet a level
  • Key Features:

  • Multi-year commitment (WEA hopes for 5-year sponsorships minimum, but flexible)

  • Annual renewal on sponsorship anniversary

  • If sponsor's circumstances change, WEA will continue funding or find another sponsor

  • Student assignment based on availability and sponsor preferences (school, gender, age/grade)

  • Annual payment by check or credit card; other arrangements available upon request
  • Sponsor Benefits & Activities:

  • Juice & Donuts Day: December event at each school for 90 minutes; sponsors work on crafts and activities with students

  • SPP Kids Bowling Party: February event; bowling, pizza, drinks, dessert from 10:30am-12:30pm

  • Student communication via letters and school email

  • Option to meet student outside school/WEA events (must arrange through School Principal and parent)

  • Attendance at student's graduation

  • Can continue sponsoring another child after student graduates

    How to Apply

    1. Notify Intention to Sponsor:
    - Email Betty Contino or Valerie Sandoval, or call (410) 456-8228
    - Your sponsorship will be recorded and acknowledged

    2. Select Scholarship Level:
    - Choose from Star Pupil ($1,000), Teacher's Helper ($2,000-$2,500), Graduate ($5,000), School Chum ($10,000), Classmates ($25,000), or Create Your Own ($1,000+)
    - Organize funding with family/friends or employer matching if needed

    3. Student Assignment:
    - A WEA volunteer will contact you to discuss details
    - Specify preferences if any (school, gender, age/grade)
    - Student assigned immediately if available, or at start of next school year

    4. Submit First Payment:
    - Online: Submit donation via website
    - By Mail: Print Donor Form and mail to WEA, c/o Bull & Associates, 308 West Joppa Road, Towson, MD 21204
    - Checks payable to "WEA"
    - Payment typically annual; other arrangements available upon request

    5. Annual Renewals:
    - WEA will notify sponsors in advance of renewal date (anniversary of month sponsored)
    - Renewal payment required by check or credit card
