Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarship

Geographic Scope: Dallas, Texas area; serves students at SMU Dedman School of Law, UNT Dallas College of Law, and Texas A&M University School of Law

Focus Areas: Diversity in the legal profession; supporting underrepresented minorities in law school

Background: Created in 1982 by the Dallas Bar Foundation to attract minority lawyers to the Dallas legal community. Named after Judge Sarah T. Hughes, a trailblazer who graduated from law school in 1922, served in the Texas Legislature in 1931, and was appointed to the 14th District Court in Dallas in 1935.

Award Details:

  • Covers three years of law school tuition

  • Foundation funds have exceeded $2.7 million

  • Expanded in 2015 to include three law schools (originally SMU only)
  • Eligibility: Students from diverse backgrounds, particularly underrepresented minorities; preference for first-generation college students and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds

    Purpose: Provide financial access and mentoring to exceptional individuals from backgrounds requiring unique courage and endurance; create a talent pipeline of diverse legal professionals in Dallas

    Funding Sources: Main funding from "Bar None" event; additional funding from "An Evening With..." program (added in 2011)
