Overview

AIA COTE Top Ten Award

Overview: The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Award recognizes and celebrates architectural projects that demonstrate exceptional design excellence integrated with sustainable performance metrics.

Background: Established in 1997 (originally called "Earth Day Top Ten" as a pilot program), the COTE Top Ten Award was conceived by Gail Lindsey, FAIA. The award grew out of efforts by COTE leadership to integrate performance standards into design excellence criteria.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Design Excellence: Beauty and performance are not mutually exclusive

  • Sustainability Metrics: Projects are evaluated on actual data versus predicted data using the COTE Super Spreadsheet

  • Environmental Performance: Carbon emissions, energy efficiency, water management, and resilient ecosystems

  • Social Impact: Equity, inclusivity, and community benefit
  • Geographic Scope: National (United States)

Eligibility: Open to architectural projects that meet evaluation criteria set by COTE technical panel with subject-matter experts

    Evaluation Process:

  • Peer-reviewed by technical panel of subject-matter experts

  • Evaluation based on actual performance data

  • Expanding criteria annually (e.g., addition of social cost of carbon)

  • Part of AIA's national design awards program
  • Recognition: One of the highest honors of design excellence within the AIA awards program; fully incorporated into AIA design awards since adoption of Framework for Design Excellence in 2019
