Overview

About the Jeremy Alex Grant Ted Alex, a past president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, saw his son Jeremy struggle with substance abuse issues which ultimately ended in his death. In his honor, Ted founded the Jeremy Alex Fund at the Portsmouth Rotary Club. For 20 years now Jeremy’s legacy has lived on through the fund. The Jeremy Alex Fund’s mission is to help kids access activities that increase their inner strength, self-esteem, sense of belonging and resilience in the face of challenges. Grant applicants should demonstrate how funds requested will address this core focus. The Jeremy Alex Fund Committee performs activities in local schools teaching fourth graders chess, providing free chess sets as well as instruction. Children learn the strategy of chess and how it relates to real-life decision-making, and also and the unintended consequences of poor decisions. Grants awarded exceeding $1,500 require follow-up by a member and documentation as to the actual use and/or application of funds. Recent recipients include PMAC, Artists in Reach, Soul Models, 4th Grade Chess Program, Little Harbor and Greenland Elementary Climbing Walls, Portsmouth High School, and Child Advocacy Center among others.
