Overview

Robert S. Gee Scholars Program

Overview: The Gee Scholars program provides financial support and mentorship for select students based on academic excellence, leadership abilities, and socioeconomic needs. Students can be selected as early as 6th grade and continue through senior year.

Eligibility:

  • Students in grades 6-11 (through 12th grade for continuing scholars)

  • Must be enrolled in Miami Public Schools

  • Must exhibit academic excellence

  • Must demonstrate personal traits, potential, and leadership abilities

  • Must demonstrate socioeconomic need
  • Award Details:

  • Financial support for educational and extracurricular achievement

  • Appropriate requests include: band, debate, science fair, athletic equipment not supplied by school district, and other school-related academic or extracurricular pursuits

  • Eligible for assistance through senior year

  • Must submit annual accountability form for continued eligibility
  • Program Structure:

  • Students are nominated by teachers

  • Selection happens by end of school year through interview process

  • Selected scholars are paired with a teacher/sponsor from their nominating teacher's building

  • Teacher/sponsor advocates for and helps manage funding requests

  • If nominating teacher cannot continue, committee assists in finding replacement sponsor
  • Named in Honor of: Robert S. Gee, local attorney and longtime Foundation board member (passed away 2004). Mr. Gee served as chairman of the scholarship committee and was instrumental in developing the scholarship.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    Nomination Timeline:

  • Teacher Nomination Forms due: April 15th (spring deadline)

  • Interviews conducted: End of school year

  • Scholar announcement: May membership meeting

  • Accountability forms due: Annually before May 1st
  • Nomination Requirements (Teacher-Initiated):
    1. Teacher downloads and completes Teacher Nomination Form
    2. Teacher can nominate multiple students
    3. Teacher assists nominated student in accessing required PDF forms
    4. Nominating teacher gathers completed documents from student and returns to teacher
    5. Teacher submits four documents to MPS Central Office:
    - Teacher Nomination Form
    - Letter of Recommendation (PDF)
    - Guardian/Parent Acknowledgement Form (PDF)
    - Robert Gee Student Letter of Self-Support (Student Application Form)

    Student Responsibilities:
    1. Complete Student Application Form/Letter of Self-Support
    2. Collect Letter of Recommendation from appropriate teacher
    3. Obtain Guardian/Parent Acknowledgement Form signed
    4. Return all documents to nominating teacher

    Selection Process:
    1. Gee Scholarship Committee (comprised of Foundation members and administrators) reviews applications
    2. Committee narrows pool of candidates
    3. Selected candidates participate in interviews
    4. Final selections announced at May membership meeting

    Funding Request Process (After Selection):
    1. Scholar discusses needs with teacher/sponsor
    2. Teacher/sponsor submits funding request via email to MPS Central Office
    3. Request should include all details required for purchase
    4. Central Office forwards to Gee Scholarship Committee
    5. Committee may contact Scholar directly for clarification
    6. Committee makes final funding decision

    Ongoing Requirements:

  • Selected scholars must annually submit accountability form for evaluation

  • Accountability form due before May 1st each year

  • Continued eligibility contingent on submission of accountability form
