About Us The Community Foundation brings people together to work towards a healthy, thriving, sustainable Eastern Connecticut. We put philanthropy into action to address the needs, rights and interests of our region, while fulfilling the passions of our donors. About Our Scholarships Since 1983, the Community Foundation has awarded over $11.9 million in scholarships from 136 funds established by generous individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits to help area students pursue an education and establish rewarding careers. Robert L. Howard, Jr. Scholarship Established by his wife Heidi in loving memory of Robert L. Howard Jr., who died unexpectedly in 2013 at the age of 42. Robert was born in New London and grew up in Preston and Groton. He was a successful CPA and a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Business. He was a 2007 recipient of the Hartford Business Journal's Top 40 Under Forty Award. He loved motocross racing, and at the time of his passing was the current President of the Central Cycle Club in Central Village. For students attending a 4-year college or university who demonstrate good character and commitment to community service, with preference for candidates who ride motocross and/or are members (or children of members) of the Central Cycle Club in Central Village, CT.
