Summary
Peer support services in Todd County aim to assist individuals recovering from substance use and mental health conditions, especially those transitioning from incarceration. With overdose rates significantly higher among released individuals, targeted recovery supports are vital. This initiative, funded by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, emphasizes the importance of daily peer support and specialized sessions to empower these individuals, helping them to set goals and build fulfilling lives.Overview
Peer support services are a proven and valuable approach to engaging individuals in recovery from substance use or mental health conditions. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), peer support is helpful because “By sharing their own lived experience and practical guidance, peer support workers help people to develop their own goals, create strategies for self-empowerment, and take concrete steps towards building fulfilling, self-determined lives for themselves.” The need for accessible peer support is particularly acute among individuals transitioning from incarceration. Drug overdose was the leading cause of death for people reentering their communities from both jail and prison in Minnesota. Research indicates that, when adjusted for age and gender, people released from jail in Minnesota experience overdose death rates 15.5 times higher than the state’s general population. These findings underscore the critical importance of targeted recovery supports for individuals reentering the community. In response to these needs, the Minnesota Legislature passed an appropriation to expand access to peer support services by an organization in Todd County pursuant to Minnesota Laws 2025, 1st Special Session, chapter 9, article 12, section 21, subdivision 3. Grant funds are designated to an organization in Todd County to provide daily peer support and specialized sessions for individuals in recovery from substance use, those transitioning out of incarceration, and those who have experienced trauma.Eligibility
