Own Your Power - Smart Thermostat Pilot Program

Program Type: Load control pilot program using smart thermostat devices

Geographic Scope: Lake Region Electric Cooperative service territory (Minnesota)

Background: Introduced in June 2025, LREC's Own Your Power program coordinates with existing load control programs and Great River Energy (wholesale power provider) to manage home heating and cooling during peak demand periods.

How It Works:

• Smart thermostat automatically pre-cools or pre-warms home 2-4°F before peak period
• Re-adjusts to 3-4°F from member's typical set point for 4 hours during peak demand
• Works with compatible smart thermostat devices already installed in members' homes

Eligible Devices:

• Honeywell Ecobee smart thermostats
• Google Nest smart thermostats

Eligibility:

• LREC members with compatible smart thermostat devices
• Members can opt-out at any time

Financial Benefits:

• Initial incentive: $25 one-time bill credit upon joining
• Annual incentive: $25 per participation season (heating AND cooling)
• Additional savings: Members benefit from co-op cost savings when demand is reduced, which helps maintain lower rates for all members
