Oliver's Fund Grants

Geographic Scope: Mahtomedi Public Schools staff only

Eligibility:

  • Licensed staff of Mahtomedi Public Schools
  • Focus Areas:

  • Increase awareness of the critical issues of youth depression and suicide

  • Reduce the stigma of seeking help for mental health concerns

  • Create an environment where young people in Mahtomedi feel able to connect and contribute to the community

  • Support social-emotional development, self-regulation skills, and resilience

  • Activities that support youth mental health and wellness
  • What They Fund:

  • Mental health curriculum and materials

  • Depression screenings in high school health classes

  • Speakers and dramatic presentations for students

  • Workshops for parents

  • Staff development on stress, grief and loss, trauma, facing adversity, substance abuse, and bullying

  • Evening programs for families

  • Mental wellness activities of student-led groups
  • Background: Oliver's Fund was created by family and friends to honor the life of Oliver Zlonis, who graduated from Mahtomedi High School in 2002 and died by suicide at age 19. Since 2004, Oliver's Fund has donated more than $47,000 to support the mental health and wellness of students in Mahtomedi Public Schools.

    Review Process: Grant applications are reviewed by an advisory committee consisting of a representative from the MAEF Board of Directors, the Zlonis Family, a mental health professional from the community, and one other community member familiar with local mental health initiatives.

    Requirements: Individuals and groups receiving funds must provide a written summary at the conclusion of the activity or project. Foundation policy and IRS regulations require that funds be returned if activities are not completed.

      Requirements

    • Application must be validated by a building principal
    • All applications are forwarded to building principals to ensure criteria have been met
    • Applicants must provide a written summary at the conclusion of the activity or project (form will be provided)
