My First Book Club

Organization: Fauquier Education Foundation in partnership with Learning Starts Early (LSE) and Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health (FRESH)

Program Overview:
A literacy support program providing new books to at-risk preschool students to improve literacy skills, promote peer interaction, and foster love of reading. Launched in 2019, the program distributes books monthly during school year plus provides related literacy initiatives.

Components:

Direct Book Distribution

• Provides new book each month during school year to at-risk preschool students within Fauquier County Public Schools (FCPS)
• Teachers receive copies to read in class
• Benefits:
- Improves literacy skills - Promotes peer interaction - Fosters love for reading
• Students take books home to share with parents and siblings
• Includes small bookshelf so children can begin personal library
• For many children, these are the first new books they own

Additional Literacy Initiatives (through grant funding)

• Dolly Parton Imagination Library: Fauquier affiliate providing age-appropriate books to all children birth through age 5
• Pre-K Summer Kits: Create kindergarten readiness kits distributed each summer
