Municipal Intern Program

Program Overview:
Links undergraduate and graduate students with municipalities, authorities, and Councils of Governments for summer internship projects. LGA pays for half of the interns' wages for the 12-week program.

Geographic Scope:

  • Western Pennsylvania communities

  • Specific counties participating include: Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, and Washington counties

  • Focus on municipalities under Act 47 or participating in the state Department of Economic Development's Early Intervention Program
  • Eligibility:

  • Students: Undergraduate and graduate students interested in internships

  • Local Governments: Municipalities, authorities, and Councils of Governments interested in employing interns
  • Focus Areas:

  • Places interns throughout western Pennsylvania communities

  • Interns complete important projects for municipalities and authorities

  • Provides experience for students' future careers
  • Funding Details:

  • LGA Contribution: Half of intern wages for 12-week program paid through LGA

  • The other half of wages funded by the employing municipality/authority

  • Background:
    The Municipal Internship Program successfully places students in meaningful summer positions while providing financial support to host municipalities. As of 2015, 18 interns were placed in the program.
