Bring Youth Outdoors Grant

Funder: The Heinz Endowments Summer Youth Philanthropy program in partnership with Local Government Academy and Sustainable Pittsburgh

Geographic Scope: Southwestern Pennsylvania municipalities

Eligibility:

  • Municipalities that have earned or are working towards Sustainable Pennsylvania Community Certification
  • Focus Areas:

  • Fund engaging, skill-building opportunities for youth through stewardship of local green space

  • Care for and upgrade green spaces

  • Create positive outdoor experiences for youth through educational workshops, recreation, and volunteering

  • Expose youth to health benefits of outdoor time

  • Increase youth awareness and appreciation of their community
  • Funding Details:

  • A pool of $25,000 is available for grant making to municipalities per the RFP

  • Half of interns' wages for 12-week program paid through LGA (for Municipal Intern Program component)

  • Background:
    This grant opportunity intends to fund engaging, skill-building opportunities for youth through the stewardship of a local green space. The funding aims to help municipalities care for and upgrade their green space while creating positive experiences for youth.

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    The application is a two-part process:

    1. First: Municipality must complete an application via The Heinz Endowments online form and then attach answers from Step 2 below.

    2. Second: Applicant must review and answer the questions listed in the Request for Proposals. These answers should then be included (linked) with the online form as an attachment.

    3. Submission: The completed application is submitted via the online process.

    Optional Informational Sessions

    Optional briefing sessions on the funding opportunities were held:

  • Thursday, 9-11 a.m., July 2 at Pittsburgh Children's Museum

  • Wednesday, 3-5 p.m., July 8 at Kelly Strayhorn Theater
