About Us

The Community Foundation of Dickinson County, Inc. was established in 1999 by a group of civic-minded individuals who cherished their community and wanted to ensure future generations experience the same quality of living they had received in Dickinson County. These visionaries secured the future of the Foundation by establishing an Endowed Founder’s Fund.

Mills Family Scholarship - (2) $2,000

Michael and Mary Mill (later changed to Mills) came to the United States in the 1860s from Germany and settled near Peru, Illinois. In 1875, they moved to a small farm just west of Enterprise, KS along the Smoky Hill River. (Their farm continues to be owned by the Mills family.)

Michael died just one year later, leaving Mary and her small son, Frank, to continue farming. Frank continued to farm and he and his wife, Anna, were the parents of eight children. Five of their sons lived to be adults, and the farming tradition carried on.

Today, there are five farmers in Dickinson County that are fifth-generation descendants of Michael and Mary Mills. The Mills Family Scholarship was established to honor their legacy of farming and to encourage young men and women to continue their education in the field of agriculture.
