Overview

McLean Community Foundation General Grants

Geographic Scope: McLean Planning District of Fairfax County, Virginia (bounded by the Potomac River, Arlington County line, Falls Church City line, Route 7, the Dulles Access Road to Difficult Run and along Difficult Run to the Potomac). Other Northern Virginia organizations may be eligible if funds provide significant benefits to McLean residents.

Purpose: To promote local philanthropy and advance the civic, educational and social interests of McLean through grant-making.

    Funding Focus

  • Grants for projects benefiting McLean residents
  • Preference for acquisition of tangible assets
  • Grants for initiation or expansion of program-related activities
  • Seed money and challenge grants
  • Projects not likely to be funded in sufficient amounts by other organizations

    Eligibility Requirements

  • Organization Type: Must be not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status required
  • Project Benefit: Must provide documented benefit to McLean residents
  • Community Support: Evidence of community support for proposed project required
  • Physical Presence: Preference given to organizations with physical presence in McLean
  • Prior Funding: Foundation considers funding awarded within prior two years to avoid concentration of support

    What the Foundation Does NOT Fund

  • Operating expenses (cannot normally be used for this)
  • Projects that inure personal benefit to individuals
  • Projects not benefiting McLean residents

    Grant Administration

  • Grantees must expend funds in timely manner following grant agreement execution
  • Six months (or date specified in agreement) after execution, grantee must furnish satisfactory evidence of project progress
  • Foundation may require return of funds not spent in timely manner or as intended
  • No obligation for additional funding beyond original grant amount
  • Foundation may initiate and fund projects meeting criteria at its discretion

Foundation Background

Established in May 1978 by the McLean Citizens Association. Has funded diverse projects including theater renovations, community center equipment, historic preservation, music programs, youth organizations, and emergency services equipment.

How to Apply

Application Process

Application Deadlines:

  • April 1 - for consideration at April meeting

  • October 1 - for consideration at October meeting

  • Applications must be received or postmarked by deadline dates
  • Review Frequency: Two times per year (April and October)

    Application Requirements:
    1. Demonstrate project provides benefit to McLean residents
    2. Provide evidence of community support for proposed project
    3. Provide evidence of not-for-profit status and 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
    4. Include project timeline and budget
    5. Describe how project meets Foundation's grants criteria
    6. Consider combining Foundation grants with funds from other community organizations (partnerships encouraged)
    7. Consider using Foundation funds as "challenge grants" to generate additional funds

    Special Considerations:

  • Applicants are highly recommended to read the Grant Policy before submitting application

  • Exceptional circumstances applications may be considered at other times at discretion of Foundation President (requires 2/3 majority vote of Trustees for non-standard grants)
  • Grant Agreement:

  • Upon approval, formal grant agreement must be executed and signed

  • Grantee must submit progress report six months after agreement execution (or other date as specified)
